Youth

At Somali Centre for Family Services (SCFS) we offer a wide range of reasonably priced programs for youth aged 8 to 19.

The goal of our program is to enhance the intellectual, physical, and social development of the participant. We provide age appropriate activities in a safe and fun environment. Promoting a healthy lifestyle, our program empowers youth to make healthy choices and to demonstrate leadership in their communities. Our approach is simple; we do not aim to fix troubled youth, but rather focus our energy on supporting and providing opportunities to all youth, troubled or not. We believe it takes an entire community pulling together to develop healthy, competent, and self-empowered youth.

Offering weekly basketball and soccer leagues both drop-in and team-based, camps, and ski trips, our recreational component is designed to engage youth. These programs allow our youth the opportunity to gain new skills, increase their network, and give back to the community. Such programs also introduce participants to different types of physical activities.

Summer Day Camp

Our day camps take place for four weeks during summer vacation. Activities include kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding, arts and crafts, bowling, and more. For more information including prices, dates and updates please check back periodically.

Overnight camp

Our Leadership Training camp, otherwise known as our outdoor retreat, is an overnight camp designed to develop young leaders in our community. The camps are segregated based on gender and respect both our culture and religion, while promoting outdoor living to youth. Camp-goers receive an authentic “camp” experience with the absence of electricity, running water, and other comforts of home.

Activities include swimming, canoeing, hiking, and more. For updates please check back periodically

Ski Trips

Allowing youth to engage in activities they normally wouldn’t be exposed to, our ski trips offer a fun-filled day out on the slopes. From a variety of activities, such as snowboarding, skiing, or tobogganing, participants have the opportunity to learn a new sport and meet new people.

Our workshops cover a wide range of issues affecting youth today. With seminars on employment, crime prevention, higher education, financial literacy, and CPR training, participants are educated on topics popular with youth.

Employment

Our centre hosts employment workshops to aid youth in finding part-time and summer employment. Aiding in resume building and networking, our centre helps youth who are seeking employment. As well, the SCFS hires youth aged 16 to 21 each summer for two months in our Youth to Youth program. In this program, youth create and organize activities for at-risk kids, all the while developing leadership and organizational skills.

Crime Prevention Workshop

Our crime prevention workshops allow participants to learn about their rights and the Canadian legal system. Please check our calendar of events for upcoming dates.

Higher Education Workshop

Offering post-secondary information sessions, our higher education workshops answers university or college-related questions high school students may have. Topics covered include admission requirements, scholarships and finances, transitioning to university life, and more. Please consult our calendar of events for upcoming dates.

Financial Literacy Workshop

Our financial literacy workshops promote a healthy understanding of money. The workshop aims to educate youth as young as 9-years-old in recognizing the value of a dollar. Issues discussed include how to save, living debt-free, budgeting, and more. Please consult our calendar of events for upcoming dates.

CPR Training Workshop

SCFS hosts CPR training for youth. Please consult our calendar of events for the next available date.

Differing from our workshops, our youth development sector consists of both ongoing services and yearly events. Including more light-hearted activities such as a Girls Night Out and award ceremonies like the End of the Year Banquet, youth development focuses on fostering a positive environment for youth to learn and grow.

End of the Year Banquet

Our End of the Year Banquet aims to honour our volunteers, community members, and youth program participants. Including a keynote speaker, awards, and food, the banquet takes place once a year usually in the first week of May. For tickets and an upcoming date please consult our calendar of events.

Sisters 4 Life Drop-In

Sisters 4 Life includes a variety of activities and opportunities, such as mentorships, halaq, rock climbing, skating, heritage night, and more. Volunteer opportunities are available for girls aged 16 and over. Please consult our schedule below for dates and times.
